Credit Unions Connect - Stories that exemplify the movement

Fort Community's Debt Dragon Opens Minds

Fort Community Credit Union in Fort Atkinson, WI partnered with Filene Research Institute and Credit Union Student Choice to help college students and families develop a better understanding of key financial decisions related to their college experience. The prototype program called Debt Dragon, is a concept that was developed by a Filene i3 team.

Debt Dragon seeks to help students gain knowledge about critical decisions such as selecting a school that is a good fit personally and financially, maximizing scholarships and grants, reducing the total amount of student loans that may be needed, and preparing for repaying student loans after graduation.

Diane Weinheimer- Webber, Business/Marketing Teacher at Jefferson High School commented, "I can tell them this stuff, but when they see it, it really hits home and sinks in."

Susan Johnson, President at FCCU, and Marissa Weidenfeller, Director of Marketing at FCCU sat in on testing during a handful of 'Independent Living' classes at Fort Atkinson High School in May. During testing they had numerous conversations with students regarding financing options, ideas on how to prepare for extra living costs, weighing the options of living at home or commuting, and much more.

As the tester selects which school they would like to attend, they are asked to make financial decisions such as buying new books or renting, living on campus or living at home, will you be working throughout school or will your parents be donating. As they proceed through the decisions their total bill will rise and decline depending on their answers. At the end of the tool they are offered some suggestions on how to bring their total debt down, along with a breakdown of how their decisions affected their total.
